So, now we’ve come to the 3rd round of the World Amateur Team Championships – the quest for the Espirito Trophy gets a bit more serious. For Team Slovenia, play returned back to their first round course, Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club. In their first round at that course, Team Slovenia shot a 157 (+13). Not bad. Ohio State’s Katja Pogacar led he team with a 78 (+6). Again, not a bad score.
Things improved considerably for Katja and Team Slovenia with their second go at Mayakoba. Katja just blistered the course with a 69 (-3) to give Slovenia a running start. Despite Katja’s efforts, the team shot a 148 (+4) for the day. Both scores, Katja’s and the team were significant improvements over their first round, but it probably felt like an opportunity wasted.
Teeing off on the 10th hole, Katja birdied the 327 yard par 4 11th hole and sat at -1 after four holes. A bogey at the 382 yard par-4 14th brought her to level par, but consecutive birdies on #16 and #17 put her at 34 (-2) after 9 holes. On her back 9 (holes #1 – #9), Katja got a measure of redemption with a birdie on the 375 yard par-4 second hole; a hole that she’d double bogeyed two days previous. She added a birdie at the short par-3 4th hole, and finished with a bogey on the long par-4 9th hole, giving her a 35 (-1) for the nine holes.
Shooting a round of 69 indicates a pretty solid effort. Katja recorded 5 birdies, 2 bogeys and 11 pars. In her Wednesday round at Mayakoba, she marked 1 birdie and 1 double bogey. Friday was a much cleaner, precise round of golf for her.
In other news, Team USA shot a 145 (+1) score in their 3rd round. Andrea Lee led the team with a nice round of 70 (-2). Her round was powered by a back nine score of 33 (-3). Well done. The team ended the round solidly in the top ten.
Meanwhile, Team Bulgaria showed dramatic improvement with a third round score of 158 (+14). This was 14 strokes better than their previous round, also played at Mayakoba. This marked the first round (so far) of the event where Bulgaria had two golfers shoot in the 70’s. Sofia Seldemirova and Ivana Simenova both shot 79’s. Good for you!
Fourth and final round recap will be up later. Thanks for stopping by.
