The Buckeyes tee it up against the Kentucky Wildcats in Tuesday’s match for 3rd place in the East & West Match Play Challenge. Ohio State lost a tough match on Monday to Oregon, 3-2, to knock them out of the championship match. This match against Kentucky will be a tough one as well. The Wildcats lost their initial match to Wisconsin, 3-2.

It’s going to be important for Ohio State to win the early holes in each match to attain an early lead. From my experience, it’s crucial in match play for a player to get an early lead; that forces the play of the opponent to make some decisions/play some shots that she/he ordinarily wouldn’t. It pushes your opponent out of her/his comfort zone. That’s anecdotal, but at the East & West this week, it held up statistically. Of the 20 team matches played on Monday, 15 were won by the player who got on the board first. That’s a 75% success rate. Granted, that’s a limited sample size, but it holds up.

I’ll be back later today to recap the Ohio State-Kentucky match. Please stop by.
