The temperatures are hovering around freezing in Buffalo and with good luck golf season will begin in three months in Western New York Fortunately, Buckeye Golf has no such constraints. The women’s and men’s programs begin their Spring portion of their 2016-2017 season in a few days/weeks.
Below are a few happenings over the past month or so that I want to bring to your attention:
- On December 1st, Coach Therese Hession (Indianapolis native) was inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame. That’s a pretty big deal. Congratulations to Therese for the recognition of her accomplishments and ongoing contribution to golf. Well done.
- Jessica Porvasnik closed out 2016 with a wire-to-wire win at the Orlando International Amateur event. Her even par score of 216 gave her a 3 shot margin for the three round event. She held the lead after each of the three rounds; most importantly after the 3rd round. Jessica had 9 birdies, 9 bogeys and 36 pars. A clean, well played tournament.
- The Buckeyes had three golfers (Jessica Porvasnik, Niki Schroeder, Alex Wright) acquit themselves well at the 62nd Harder Hall Women’s Invitational in Sebring, FL. This was a four day, no-cut tournament that drew over 90 amateur golfers from an international field. Jessica (298, +10 to par) finished 8th in the Championship Flight. Niki (307, +17) finished 21st in the same flight. Alex (322, +22) finished 16th in the First Flight.
The women’s team had a schedule change that I think will be beneficial for the team. They will travel to Boca Raton, FL for a match against Florida Atlantic University on January 16th. Historically, the team has participated in an alumni match that weekend. I guess that’s a great opportunity for practice / play / networking for the team, but I’m not sure how serious the golf is. A head-to-head match is probably a bit more competitive. this will be a good tempering for the younger players.
Meanwhile, men’s coaches Jay Moseley and Brad Smith and the men’s team are gearing up for their Spring Season opener February 8th & 9th for the Big Ten Match Play Championship. The event will be played at Hammock Beach Resorts – Ocean Course in Palm Coast, FL.
I’ll be living vicariously through Buckeye Golf the next few months. Please join me…
