Ohio State lineup

Team Match Play: Jaclyn Lee, Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Niki Schroeder, Rio Watanabe. Alex Wright will represent Ohio State in the Individual match play competition.

Recap

In the opening morning matches versus Purdue, Ohio State came out on the short end of the 5 point match, 3.5 – 1.5. The one and a half points were acquired by tying three matches; the Buckeyes did not win a match in the morning.

Rio Watanabe, Jessica Porvasnik and Jaclyn Lee tied their matches.  Niki Schroeder  lost her match 2&1 and Katja Pogacar lost 5&4.

Jessica

Jessica was 1 down through 15 holes, then birdied the par-3  7th hole (here 16th hole) to bring the match to all square. Jessica and her opponent both parred the remaining to holes to end the match all square.

Jaclyn

Jaclyn struggled to get anything going Monday morning. Through 16 holes, she had 7 bogeys and was down 2 with 2 to go (dormie 2). However, she finished birdie-par to even her match. After playing ‘meh’ all morning, a birdie-par stretch to tie the match is pretty strong finish.

Niki

Niki ran into a buzz saw Monday morning, losing her match 2 &1. Niki played well, even par through 17 holes; 3 birdies, 3 bogeys. However, her opponent was flawless, shooting -2 through 17 holes. That’s one of the vagaries of match play – sometimes you play well but still come up a bit short.

Katja

Katja had a rough day, losing 5&4. After nine holes, Katja was 7 over par and 5 down. Being 5 holes down after nine holes is not a good situation to be in. At all. For some good news, Katja did play the first five holes on her back nine in -1 to par; but so did her opponent.

Rio

Rio was down 1 hole through 12. She lost the next two holes to put her in some trouble, down 3 holes with 4 to go.  However, over the next four holes, Rio had two birdies and an eagle to finish the match at all square. She was actually down one hole after 17, then made a birdie on her last hole to square the match. That’s pretty clutch shooting.

Comments

The Buckeyes had stretches where they played valiant golf to pull even in their matches. Hopefully, the late round surges carry over to the Monday afternoon matches.

Ohio State moves into the consolation bracket for the afternoon round, playing Oregon State, 3-2 losers to USC. I’ll have final round recap later today or Tuesday. Please stop back.

Go Buckeyes!
