We have some golf coming up soon. OSUMG play the Linger Longer Invitational on Sunday-Tuesday. OSUWG play the Briar Creek Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Good times. Meanwhile, Buckeye Golf hasn’t spent it’s time sitting in the Grill Room.

Women’s Golf

Based upon her 2-0-1 record in the Gifford Cup (5 of a possible 6 points), Jessica Porvasnik was recognized as Big Ten Golfer of the Week. Her win in the third round (3&2 vs Georgia’s Rinko Mitsunga) allowed OSU to win the tie-breaker, and the match, 2-1.

This is the 5th time Jessica received this honor, the 2nd time this season. Congratulations, Jessica.

Men’s Golf

Meanwhile, the men’s team was off (no scheduled events) since February 21st, but still no reason not to get in a few holes. Four Buckeyes (Jack Mancinotti, Jeg Coughlin III, Caleb Ramirez, Max Rosenthal) participated, as Individuals (not as a team) in the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, GA. This was a 36 hole, one day event that drew 90 golfers.

Here’s how they finished:

T-30th | Jack Mancinotti 70-77–147 (+3)
T-35th | Jeg Coughlin III 76-72–148 (+4)
T-47th | Caleb Ramirez 82-69–151 (+7)
T-52nd | Max Rosenthal 77-75–152 (+8)

Jack was tied for 4th place after the morning round, only two strokes out of the lead. A sub-par round is a great way to start your day.

Jeg’s even par 2nd round moved him up 11 spots for the day. Par golf can be a good thing.

Caleb rebounded very nicely in his second round. His afternoon round of 69 was 8th best in the 90 player field. Caleb moved up 31 spots with that round. That’s passing a lot of golfers. A nice turnaround.

Max stayed steady in the 52nd-54th positions with his rounds. I liked the improvement from morning to afternoon play and that both rounds were reasonably well played.

I think this was a great move by coaches Moseley and Smith. This enabled players who have not played that many “team” rounds to participate in a competitive environment. During a lull in the schedule, it’s a great way to get some of the younger players on the course.

Go Buckeyes!
