The nation’s second ranked team in Men’s Volleyball, The Ohio State University, dominated their league, the MIVA, with a perfect 16-0 record.
The Buckeyes capped off the perfect season with a win over Missouri occupant Linwood (5-17, 4-11 MIVA) on the 7th of April, 3-0; and Quincy the following evening, the 8th, 3-1.
The Buckeyes have become the second team in the MIVA in the past 25 years to go undefeated; Loyola-Chicago went 14-0 in 2014. In that 2014 season Loyola-Chicago went on to win the National Championship. As we are fully aware, the Buckeyes are in the hunt for a repeat, having been crowned National Champs last year.
The Buckeyes are now to roll into the MIVA Tournament this coming weekend in Columbus seeded # 1 and will meet up against Quincy (7-21, 2-14 MIVA). They are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off; the winner of this match will meet-up with the winner of the Ball State and Loyola-Chicago winner on the 19th.
Long Beach State sits at number one nationally with 3 losses, while the Buckeyes have 2. The argument, undoubtedly surface to the point, or is that points? LBS has 357, the Buckeyes 331. But, in truth I cannot still comprehend the loss column, and that the Buckeyes beat Long Beach State head-to-head back on the 28th of January in Columbus, 3-1.
The Buckeyes will not travel again for the remainder of the 2017 season, hosting all their potential MIVA Tournament games (April 15, 19, 22) and serving as the final-destination of the NCAA Men’s National Collegiate Volleyball Championship May 4 and May 6.
The 2017 season has been tremendous. The Buckeyes were undefeated throughout the season until they fell flat on March 11th against UC-Irvine, losing 3-0. They would be caught off guard again five matches later in University Park, PA against Penn State in a 3-2 thriller.
Regardless how it all pans out for the Buckeyes we can truly attest that this team has given us a tremendous ride, injecting that wondrous Buckeye Pride we all love to feel, and if they fail in a repeat – we can ….
What’s wrong with me? Are those words coming from me? My God! I apologize. The Buckeyes will march through the MIVA Tournament and into the NCAA Tournament with a squared-set and determination. Repeat. Let me here you say it with me – REPEAT.
Go Buckeyes! Keep an eye on the Buckeyes this coming Saturday, the 15h (No longer tax-day, at least this year!!). There appears to be no scheduling of this event for TV, which is another sore spot lingering in my mind over this unjust Buckeye Men’s Volleyball snub …. But we shall have the last laugh.
