Buckeye alumna Katja Pogacar had a pleasant week in Marrakech, Morocco. It was the site of the Ladies European Tour Lalla Aicha Tour School qualifying event. It was a five round (90 holes) of stroke play competition. The top 25 finishers earned their Ladies European Tour card for 2018 and the next 35 finishers earned partial tour status for the upcoming year.

Katja rode her ‘ Marrakech Express ‘ to a five round total of 355 (-5) and a tie for 19th place. She was just inside the cut line of -4, but that’s okay; you don’t have to make the qualifying cut by a lot – you just have to make it.

Katja opened the tournament with a 71 (-1). On her 2nd round, she shot an even par 72. She lost a little ground to the top scorers, but was still in good position. Katja’s 3rd round was a well played 69 (-3) where she made up a lot of that ground from the second round. She shot a 71 (-1) in her 4th round and wrapped up the event with an even par 72 to earn her card.

I thought Katja put together a clutch tournament with some very steady play. Her “best-worst” score range was only 3 strokes (69 – 72) indicating a game that was in control for 90 holes.

A peek up and down the leaderboard, and there were quite a few players that had a much wider range in scores. Katja didn’t o as low as a lot of other players, but she didn’t go nearly as high as them, either.  In fact, her high round of the tournament was 72. If even par is the worst round you shoot, you’ve had some damn good rounds.

Congratulations, Katja.
