Following the victory on Sunday the 23rd against Penn State, 3-1, a nice victory indeed, the Buckeyes Women’s Volleyball team fell to the Indiana Hoosiers in Columbus on Wednesday the 26th, 3-1 at St. John’s Arena (25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 25-8) at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes fall to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten action while the Hoosiers improve to 11-3 (2-1 B1G).
For the Buckeyes, Madison Smeathers and Vanja Bukilić patrolled the offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Jordan Fry wasn’t far behind with nine kills and four blocks. Mia Grunze added eight kills and eight digs. Becca Mauer had her second straight double-double; 30 assists, 12 digs.
Three other Buckeyes would also hit double figures in digs, led by Hannah Gruensfelder with 15. Camry Halm dug 13 balls and Bia Franklin notched 12.
As a team, Ohio State out-dug Indiana, 64-55, and out-blocked the squad by an 8-5 margin.
SET 1: Indiana got out to a furious start with a 9-4 lead. The Buckeyes moved in on the gap making it 13-11, to force the Hoosiers to call for time. Ohio State rallied for a 20-18 edge, but the visitors closed the set on a 7-1 run for a 25-21 decision.
SET 2: After falling behind early, the Buckeyes scored seven straight points to go ahead 12-7. The Hoosiers were unable to get any closer than five as Ohio State kept pounding away for a 25-18 winner. The home team hit .378 with 17 assists on 18 kills.
SET 3: The two teams kept it close, though The Ohio State Buckeyes found a need to burn a timeout as they were trailing 17-14. Out of the break, Indiana managed to hold Ohio State at arm’s length to take the set, 25-20.
SET 4: It was all Hoosiers – enough said – a 25-8 whipping.
The Buckeyes had desire in this one, but somewhere the light switch was flipped off. The Hoosiers shinned when it all mattered.
UP NEXT: The Buckeyes will be traveling to College Park to face Maryland at 7 p.m. Saturday.
