We begin our golf season on the resort of Sea Island and the Jones Cup Invitational. Will Grimmer and Daniel Wetterich received invitations, so golfers like you and I probably can’t play. Here is a list of events that the Jones Cup Committee factors into who receives an invitation. Living in Western New York, I’m relieved to see the Porter Cup is one of the qualifier tournaments.
Back to Will and Daniel. The Ocean Forest (think about that for a second) Golf Club is set up at 7,321 yards and plays to a par 72. That’s a lot of ground to cover in relation to par.
Will began his event on the back nine with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole, always a nice way to start. He followed with back to back birdies on #14 and #15 to make the turn at 33 (-3). Will followed with a back nine of 35 (-1) to have a tournament leading 68 (-4) and a two stroke lead over Stephen Franken’s (Raleigh, NC) 70.
Daniel also began his round on the back nine. He opened with bogeys on two of his first three holes, then got back to level par with back to back birdies on #13 and #14. Two additional bogies got Daniel to the turn in decent shape at 38 (+2). His back nine of 2 birdies/3 bogies 37 (+1) was even better. His round of 75 (+3), left him only two strokes out of the top ten.
Daniel tees off at Will tees off at 9:50 today and Will at 10:40. I’ll update results with second round recap later today (Saturday) or tomorrow.
