The Buckeyes are in Fayetteville, AR for the NCAA Championships.

Course: The Blessings Golf Club is the home course of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. The course is set up at 7,550 yards and to a par of 72. According to the scorecard the rating/slope is 77.7/148. At my course (70.2/113, 6.412 yd) with my Index of 10.7, I would be an 11 handicap. Here, I’d be a 14.

Honestly, 14 strokes wouldn’t be close to what I’d need, the course is much too long for me. There are no par-5’s I’d reach in regulation, maybe reach 4 of the 10 par-4’s and the par-3s are 50-50.  I’m a number of things but I’m not a masochist…

Format: The familiar “play 5, count 4” with teams also fielding players to participate as Individuals.

Field: The 14 team field, below, and their GolfStat Top 50 rankings.

Recap

The Buckeyes put together a strong start to finish the opening round in 7th place with a team score of 297 (+9).  They teed off in the morning wave (8:20 am) and midway through the round were actually at the top of the leaderboard. The course and the afternoon wave caught up with them and they finished in 7th place.

Right now, they are in good position. There are two more rounds of stroke play which will determine the low scoring eight teams. These eight teams will advance to the match play portion, which will actually determine the NCAA Champion. Any finish in the top eight is the goal.

The Buckeyes were led by Daniel Wetterich with a 71 (-1) and Will Grimmer with a 72 (E). Caleb Ramirez, Will Voetsch and Laken Hinton all had 77 (+5)..

Daniel is T-6th in the 156 player field. Will G is T-12th and Caleb, Will V and Laken are T-69th.

The Buckeyes began play on hole #10.

Daniel

Daniel was a bit streaky on the day. After three holes, he was +1, then played the next five holes in birdie-par-eagle-par-birdie to get him to the turn in 33 (-3). After three consecutive pars to open his back nine, Daniel went bogey-birdie-bogey to get his round to -4 for the day, Three consecutive bogeys closed out his round and he finished with a nine of 38 (+2) and a round of 71 (-1).

Daniel averaged 2.75 (-1) on the par-3s, placing him T-4th in the field; 4.10 (+1) on the par-4s and 4.75 (-1) on the par-5s. He had 1 eagle, 4 birdies and 8 pars.

Will G

Will was +2 through five holes of play, then birdied two of four holes to make the turn in 36 (E). His back nine consisted of three birdies, three pars and three bogeys for another 36 (E) and a round of 72 (E).

Caleb

Caleb was +1 after four holes, then strung together back-to-back birdies on #14 and #15 followed by a double bogey, making the turn at 37 (+1).  His back nine of 40 (+4) was a bit choppier with 2 birdies, 2 bogeys and 2 double bogeys, giving Caleb a round of 77 (+5).

Will V

Will had five pars on his opening nine, but couldn’t get anything going and made the turn at 41 (+5). He had a great stretch in his first eight holes on his back nine, playing them in -2. A double bogey on his last hole leveled his back nine to 36 (E) and gave Willa round of 77 (+5). After some wheel-spinning on his front nine, the even par back nine was a nice recovery.

Will averaged 3.50 (+2) on the par-3s, 4.40 (+4) on the par-4s and 4.75 (-1) on the par-5s.  Will had 2 birdies and 11 pars.

Laken

Laken began play with a double bogey, then added 2 bogeys and a birdie to make the turn at 39 (+3). His back nine was a bit more sedate with 2 bogeys and 7 pars for a 38 (+2) and a round of 77 (+5).

Laken averaged 3.00 (E) on the par-3s, 4.40 (+4) on the par-4s and 5.25 (+1) on the par-5s. He had 1 birdie and 12 pars.

Comments

I’ll assume the GolfStat rankings are legitimate. If so, then Ohio State is playing really well. GolfStat has the Buckeyes ranked #42, which has them as the lowest ranked team in the field. They are, to this point, outperforming quite a few teams. Hopefully, after another two rounds, they’ve have outperformed all but seven teams, at the least.

The field averaged 77.03 strokes. Ohio State’s five golfers averaged 74.8 strokes. Two strokes per round is a sizable advantage.
